A visit to the Whitney Plantation can provide a counterpoint to all of your visits to "great houses" of the time period.

If you have access to a car while in New Orleans (or if you’re local) this is well worth a visit. It’s the only plantation “museum” that’s exclusively focused on slavery. The audio guide is really well done too. You can either bring your own headphones and download an app to listen to the guide or you can borrow one of their sets and headphones. Very powerful and important history lesson.

Best plantation tour I’ve ever been on; extremely informative of the African American experience from beginning to end. The care and consideration put into this plantation is phenomenal. It isn’t super shady though, so be prepared!
