To touch the humid walls more than two and a half centuries old of Fort Matanzas National Monument, hop on a small ferry and cross the river to this Spanish outpost fort. It's in the midst of a salt marsh and rich with wildlife. See the exact room where soldiers were sleeping, eating, and getting dressed before their duties. Up on the rooftop, you can check out the cannons that were used to guard the area. Pick up free tickets at the visitor center on the mainland. The area is suitable for picnicking. Touring this fort, you realize what history is all about!!!! Amazing how it was built and the sacrifices men and women of that time endured. A must visit.

We knew before we arrived that the ferry wasn't running that day so not holding that against them. It does look like a small "fort" compared to Fort Pulaski where we had just come from. A good...

The Boat Ride is awesome! We loved traveling across the River to the fort. The Fort is a lot of fun. You get a true feeling for what it was like to live and serve at the Fort. It is beautiful to look out from the top and see the Ocean and the Landscape of The Real Florida. It is definitely worth taking the time to Walk the Boardwalk. There are Benches spread out along the way to allow for resting and enjoying Nature. There are signs and examples of the animals and creatures that live in the area. The look out over the river is beautiful as well. We always spot an animal or bird!
Great family activity! Takes an hour from start to finish. Go first thing when they open if you want an morning ticket or you will have to wait to the afternoon. Great trail to explore and kill time while you wait. If you have kids ask for the activity book, it keeps them busy and has great information. The park rangers are very knowledgeable and friendly!
