If the stones of Bonaventure Cemetery could talk, they would narrate some of Savannah's most dramatic stories. Located on a scenic bluff overlooking the Wilmington River, the cemetery shot to fame in 1994 when it became a setting for a movie directed by Clint Eastwood. A quiet place of oaks, lawn sculptures, and dripping Spanish moss, the cemetery attracts visitors with its eerie feel, which inspired writer John Berendt to call it "the garden of good and evil." As you stroll through the cemetery, look for the graves of poet Conrad Aiken, actress Edythe Chapman, and songwriter Johnny Mercer. Bonaventure Cemetery is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our , world travel planner Edition.

Quiet cemetery, beautiful trees, some famous people buried there. The famous statue from "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil" is not there anymore; it's in a museum. Peaceful place to walk...

The history of this cemetery is fascinating. The artistry beautiful. The stories worth knowing, I visited this cemetery in 2015 and recommend it to anyone who visits Savannah. Allow a couple hours.

Must see location when touring or visiting the Savannah, GA area. Bonaventure Cemetery is the largest of the city’s municipal cemeteries, stretching over 160 acres. Trust me when I say there is some rich history at this cemetery coupled with some impressive and immaculate headstones. Some of which stand taller than 25+ feet! Much like a lot of Savannah, GA there is an obvious Victorian influence that drapes the cemetery which brings an unnerving beauty with it. Given the size of the cemetery there are several different touring options for visitors, ranging from golf cart tours all the way to Segway tours. These are great options for anyone wanting a tour guide to learn the rich history behind this cemetery and some of the notable people buried throughout it. However, for those wanting to walk the cemetery at their own pace, there is free visitor parking and guests are allowed to freely walk the entirety of the cemetery. My wife and I chose this option as we decided to visit the cemetery last minute, but if we were to go again we would definitely sign up for one of the organized tours for a few different reasons. 1. We walked around for about an hour and a half and only seen about 15% of the entire cemetery. 2. We had so many questions about some of the tombstones and headstones that we had to leave unanswered. Either way, any visit to Bonaventure Cemetery is sure to be a remarkable one, BUT be prepared to wear comfortable shoes if you are not participating in a ride along tour option as it requires a GREAT deal of walking. P.S. I normally would upload pictures for any of my reviews, but it did not feel particularly respectful to be taking pictures at a destination such as this. My own opinion at least.

Very humbling and sobering. Gorgeous with the trees and headstones. They run on donations so we donated $5 for the one map and which was essentially a brochure. The woman also provided us with a plain paper one. Very interesting to see war vets of the confederacy and from WW2. We walked it and then on our way out we drove around it as well.
