Create an itinerary including Marie Selby Botanical Gardens
Marie Selby Botanical Gardens specialize in epiphytes, especially orchids and bromeliads, and boast one of the largest and most diverse collections in the world. (Epiphystes grow on other plants but are not parasitic; they derive moisture and nutrients from the air and rain.) The staff at this lush tropical oasis is devoted to growing, preserving, and studying these plants. Rest on a bench or have a snack at the cafe. Artists are encouraged to bring their sketchbooks. Consider bringing insect repellant. See Marie Selby Botanical Gardens and all Sarasota has to offer by arranging your trip with our Sarasota trip planner.

  • We visited the middle of January and were amazed only by the Costa Rican mask display in the house. Excellent project to support local artists from Costa Rica. Another non amazing were the flowers...

  • A beautiful variety of native Florida plants and other tropicals, beautifully displayed! The numerous orchids in the glory of their forms and colors are a treat to the eyes. A cacao tree in fruit, surrounded by orchids was whimsical! It is truly incredible that such a diversity of plant life and sheer numbers of plants and trees can be enjoyed in the limited space. The bay walk with it's mangrove stands, and the look out with brown pelicans in the vicinity was a true delight. The water is clear and shallow enough so that one can see horseshoe crabs come out of the sand to scour the ocean floor for food. This place is a museum, an art gallery, a nature preserve and a monument to history. There's something for everyone, with ample spots to rest while taking in the display of nature all around.
  • This is one of my favorite gardens to visit anywhere!!! When orchids are blooming they are just gorgeous, there are always bonsai trees on display, and the natural Florida beauty presented is breathtaking. All of it has a backdrop of water. What more could you want? Like any garden - you must be prepared to walk. Note to parents: there is a great play area that you and your kids will like.
