The historical Sanibel Island Lighthouse was finally erected in 1884 after several decades of pressure from locals. It marked the entrance to San Carlos Bay for ships visiting the once-busy port of Punta Rassa. Today, the lighthouse is on the National Register of Historic Places and a popular end destination for beach strolls. Though you cannot enter inside the lighthouse or keeper's house, the grounds are a pleasant place to explore and take photos. All this is was a metal structure with a light at the top. I was expecting a real lighthouse that we can climb and look out. What a disappointment. But the area itself was very pretty.

Fun place to go shelling!

Great little lighthouse. Very different from the ones I'm used to up in Maine. Restrooms are available as is bike parking. You can drive cars to it but there isn't parking directly at the lighthouse for them. A nice little jaunt on a beautiful day!
