H.L. Hunley Submarine
Built for the Confederate Army during the Civil War, H.L. Hunley Submarine was the first undersea vehicle to sink a ship. During its career, the submarine sank three times. The last time left the Hunley at the bottom of Charleston's outer harbor until its recovery in 2000. At the museum, see a replica of the submarine along with artifacts found inside of it. Consider joining a guided tour through the exhibits to learn more about the sub's history and conservation. Head to the conservation laboratory near the museum to see the recovered wreckage inside a tank of water. You can book your tickets online in advance. Walk-up tickets are also available on a first-come, first-served basis. Add H.L. Hunley Submarine and other attractions to your North Charleston trip itinerary using our North Charleston driving holiday planning app.

Our presenters were obviously really into their subject and possessed a lot of knowledge. The presentation was just too long for me. I found the displays interesting

Anyone interested in US history or naval history will be well rewarded. I was thrilled by how close to this legendary vessel you can get from the viewing platform. The museum is chock full of informative and professional exhibits and displays which you can view as you walk to the room that contains the Hunley. The Hunley itself is well displayed in it's special tank. Take care to note the hours of operation and the location, which is well away from the downtown historic core of Charleston. While you're in downtown Charleston be sure to check out the replica Hunley which sits on a street corner in front of the Charleston Museum.

If you are a history buff, old sailor or just interested. You will enjoy visiting the Hunley. I followed it over the years and still learned things. And the story of the coin is romantic and sad. If you get the chance go see it.
