Manhattan's military and maritime history museum, Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum houses a large collection of craft that includes an aircraft carrier, submarine, NASA's prototype space shuttle, and a supersonic reconnaissance plane. Originally opened in 1982, the museum underwent a 22-year renovation of its facilities, reopening in 2008. You can access it by public bus or subway, and spend the day journeying through the evolution of sea, air, and space vessels. The Space Shuttle Pavilion showcases Enterprise, named after the starship from the popular "Star Trek" TV series and built to perform test flights in the atmosphere, along with artifacts, photos, audio, and films covering NASA's space shuttle program. Try your hand at flying a supersonic jet by visiting the virtual flight zone, designed with cutting-edge multi-sensory technology. Put Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum and other New York City attractions into our New York City trip planner, and watch your holiday take shape.

One of the best activities for kids in the city. The carrier is magnificent, full of naval and avionics displays that allow you hands on experience flying fighters, landing the shuttle and more. The Enterprise is glorious, we are truly blessed to stand so close to such an important tool to mankind. Where else can you step foot onto a submarine? The views of the city are spectacular and underrated, despite the modern architecture your mind is transported to days past as you stand on the deck of an aircraft carrier looking up at Midtown. Incredible experience, not to be missed.

I thought it was cool. Plenty to see and not super crowded on a Thursday in the summer. Good for a come couple hours if you have kiddos that like war history. I'd compare it to the naval museum in Norfolk Virginia with the battleship attached, but not necessarily like a Smithsonian. It is really awesome that the museum is INSIDE the air craft carrier. And the restrooms were pretty clean. Best ages for this are probably upper elementary to younger teenagers.
