Create an itinerary including Hana Highway - Road to Hana
One of the area's most famous highways, Hana Highway - Road to Hana is about the journey rather than the destination. Your 84 km (52 mi) trip between Kahului and Hana will guide you to some of the island's most beautiful sites, many of which are significant in local mythology. You can drive the road yourself or take a tour. The latter is a better option for nervous drivers because the winding road is very narrow. Along the way, you'll see towering waterfalls, miles of coastline, and gardens, and will have several opportunities for hiking or swimming. Food vendors are dotted along the highway, but it's a good idea to bring water and snacks with you. Stop at Halfway to Hana to sample some of its famous banana bread. • The north road to Hana is really not that bad. And all the stops we did were awesome. We used the guided Shaka app and would recommend. The south of Hana part, especially after the pools is ROUGH and scary. The other side of the island has a scary one lane road that doesn’t get the bad press this road does and it made this trip a walk in the park by comparison.
  • Pros: Absolutely gorgeous, scenic, photo ops, waterfalls, interesting Cons: twisty-turny, need Dramamine if even mildly motion sick, takes a long time (about 15mph at best), many one-car roadways/bridges, some drivers less than considerate This road is VERY interesting, we did not make it all the way to Hana, but about 2/3 of the way. Consider time when tackling this scenic route as much of the road is listed around 15mph and it is necessary to go slow. There are a ton of one-car bridges/road spaces, many yield to oncoming traffic spots, hairpin turns and blind corners, you literally can't speed this up. That said, it is gorgeous, there are a lot of stops, waterfalls, and scenic vistas that make it worth it along the way. Consider a tour to take off stress instead of doing it yourself.
