Smathers Beach features 800 m (0.5 mi) of coconut palm-lined, white-sand seashore with picnic spots and beach vendors. Famous for its tropical scenery, the beach is a popular, exceptionally photogenic wedding-portrait spot. You can rent kayaks or participate in water sports at the site, or go snorkeling to see an abundance of tropical marine life. The shallow waters make it a good family destination, although it often gets crowded during school breaks. Located only 166 km (110 mi) from Havana, this beach was the starting point of 64-year-old Diana Nyad's free swim to Cuba in 2013. Water smells and looks terrible. I live near one of the most polluted lakes in the US and I would rather swim there.

Many online blogs and sites point to this place as one of the best places to catch sunrise. Couldn't agree more! Calm and Serene place in the early mornings to get a quick walk and watch sunrise. Good amount of sand space if you wanna settle down and take in the sun. You could easily park on the road side just by the beach. If you are a morning person, then this is a must do. Tip: catch the rise and follow it up with a quick Cuban coffee on the way back!

For Beach people not wanting to drive far this is a win. Cheap parking at $4 an hour easy access to beach by steps. At one point I did see a ramp as well. I had 3 children with me in tow and this definitely fulfilled their wanting to go to the beach. If this beach was anywhere else I probably wouldn't have rated it this high but for Key West where water access is a game of monopoly (it's all pay to play) it was what I needed it to be. Soft sand, cold water, easy to get to, affordable and fun for the kids. So in that it was a win for us.
