Offering a mix of history and recreation, Fort Zachary Taylor centers on a military fort from the Civil War era. Construction began in 1845 and lasted nearly 20 years. The fort played an important role in a network of military garrisons located along the southeastern coast. Deactivated in the 1940s, the fort contains the largest collection of Civil War cannons in the country. Take a short tour of the military establishment, and then spend time swimming, snorkeling, or scuba diving on the sandy beach. To escape tourist crowds near the fort, hike or cycle the natural trails crisscrossing the park. Beach was uncrowded. Best to bring water shoes as there are a lot of slippery rocks by waters' edge. Pleasant little cafe, shaded picnic tables, interesting fort with some great views.

I visited Key West earlier this month (March) and I absolutely loved the beach at the park. We arrived early and were able to grab a perfect spot with rental chairs and umbrellas. They also offer snorkeling and floating bed rentals. Highly recommend the floating bed! The staff at the rental kiosk and the cafe were exemplary. The girls at the cafe were especially patient when our group kept getting our order confused. The only downside: It is a rather ROCKY beach. Not the worst I've seen, but BRING WATER SHOES. That being said, my friends who were in flip flops still loved it far more than other beaches we visited at Key West. I wish we had had more time to visit the Fort.

One of the best beaches in Key West. I always have a blast stopping here. People were super friendly too! Great park area with lots of different plants to read about and view. We even saw a huge Iguana just chilling in a tree! Water was pretty calm and not too murky. There are lots of rocks on the beach so wear some water shoes if needed! Had a great time taking in the scenery and enjoying the ocean waters, I love Key West. This is a must stop for beach goers if you're in the area!
