Step back in time at Audubon House & Tropical Gardens, the former home of maritime pilot and master wrecker Capt. John H. Geiger. The grand property, built by the captain in the 1840s, has been restored to its former glory. A guided tour of the house, which is filled with antiques, provides a glimpse into the comfortable lives that wealthy Key West families enjoyed during the mid 19th century. Once the tour is over, you are free to explore the house and 0.4 hectare (1 acre) tropical gardens independently. The gardens are said to have been visited by the naturalist J.J. Audubon in 1832, who then used images from the gardens in his drawings. Be sure to read the information panels throughout the property to discover more about the Geiger family and Key West society in the 1800s. We came across the Audubon House by accident. It's a peaceful gardens and historical house from the 1800s. Bird drawings and prints by James Audubon based on his time here were impressive to see...

I've thought about this review a great bit! Audubon was a truly complex person. He was a slave holder, and a true advocate for slavery! He also shot every single bird he ever painted (hundreds of times in many cases!)That being said, Audubon's artwork is brilliant beyond dispute! It's still in question whether he stayed in this house. But this house is well worth the visit! The grounds are beautiful! The home is a brilliant snapshot of Key West in the early 19th century. Note: I'm a bird fan!

Can't say enough about the professionalism of Laura from Audubon House. We had our wedding there this past Saturday and it was amazing! Laura, who is the events and wedding coordinator was amazing from start to finish. We actually had to push our wedding due to Covid and it was such a smooth process. As locals, we stopped in several times to walk through the venue, and Laura always took time out of her day to answer questions and show us around the property, giving advice on setup along the way. Laura, you are truly good at what you do. Thanks for making our day so special.
