Create an itinerary including Fern Grotto
Surround yourself with some of the most beautiful nature the island of Kauai has to offer by visiting Fern Grotto. The lush lava-rock grotto is one of the island's natural wonders--a natural amphitheater renowned for its acoustics, it's considered one of the most romantic locations in the whole of Hawaii. The only way for visitors to reach the sight is by taking a boat on the Wailua River. There are numerous companies that organize river cruises, while the more athletic visitors can also kayak to the grotto. For safety reasons, entering the grotto itself is prohibited, but there is a viewing platform from where you can admire the sights and sounds. For Fern Grotto and beyond, use our Wailua vacation maker tool to get the most from your Wailua vacation.

  • Breathtaking-Beautiful. I try to see and appreciate all the beauty Kauai has to offer. The Fern Grotto riverboat did that. Peaceful and relaxing. You get to learn about Hawaiian ‘s history on the Waimea River. My family of all ages enjoyed the outing.
  • We kayaked to the Fern Grotto and parked to the right of the green docks where it says kayak parking. The walk to the grotto isn’t very far and there are restrooms. The flowers were beautiful and the grotto was pretty cool in person, photos don’t do it justice. It is a part of WAILUA RIVER STATE PARK so if you kayak there you are allowed to see the grotto without riding on a tour boat.
