Take a break from Hawaii's busy tourist areas with a visit to Liliuokalani Gardens, situated just southeast of downtown Hilo. The main feature of this 12 hectare (30 acre) park is an Edo-style Japanese garden, one of the largest such features outside Japan. Built in the early 1900s, the garden features several bridges, koi ponds, pagodas, statues, and a traditional Japanese teahouse. Adjacent to the park you’ll find a small picnic area locally known as the "Coconut Island," once the site of an ancient healing temple. Connected to the park by a footbridge, the island offers unobstructed views of downtown Hilo and its picturesque bay. Use our Hilo tour planner to add Liliuokalani Gardens and other attractions to your Hilo vacation plans.

  • Lovely Japanese style garden/park with lots of cute bridges over ponds where our 5 year old enjoyed running around and exploring. Peaceful outdoor area to have a picnic or just walk around- be sure...

  • Gorgeous Banyan trees line this park. We felt teeny tiny under these gigantic trees. A paved walkway runs throughout and it is mostly level. This is a great park for all ability levels. There are benches placed along the path for resting. Everything is so green and lush in this park.
  • So many cool trees and flowering plants. Saw a marriage while we were there. A lot of people go to have a nice walk and see the beautiful Japanese inspired sculptures.
