The saltwater lagoons at Dolphin Research Center are home to a family of dolphins and California sea lions, and offer educational and interactive experiences with marine life. The center originally opened in 1958 as Santini’s Porpoise School and became famous after a few of its dolphins starred in the 1963 film Flipper. The site was founded in 1984 as a non-profit research center and continues to promote the understanding of marine mammals. The center has educational presentations every half-hour and opportunities for live animal encounters. Not only can you swim with the dolphins here, but you can also paint with them. BOOK EARLY!!! Great experience but you need to book a few days out. If you think you’re going to do more than just the basic ticket (paint, train, swim etc) then you need to book a few days in advance. I didn’t know this & it was booked when we finally decided when to go. IT WILL FILL UP. A truly wonderful experience nonetheless just wish we could’ve done more!
What an amazing place and terrific experience! Swimming with Dolphins was on my bucket list and I was finally able to do it! Highly recommend doing some sort of "encounter" with them to get the full experience. Facility was nice, instructors were knowledgeable and with great personalities. Jess was great to work with and you can truly see the passion these folks have for these animals! If you are anywhere in the Keys, this is a must-see excursion!! It is also a GREAT cause with numerous ways to donate to support the work being done here.
