Take a terrifying tour beneath the streets of one of England's oldest cities at The York Dungeon. After purchasing your ticket to the depths, a guard or rag-clad prisoner will lead you through a maze of torture devices and dank cells, where you may still find a poor soul awaiting his fate. Don't worry, it's all an act. In fact, you can choose your favorite period of England's dark history to explore: the great plague, ghost stories at the Golden Fleece Inn, the judgment of sinners, or the torture chamber. Professional actors pose as soothsayers, hangmen, jailers, and witch burners and lead you through the halls with a dose of humor and history. The York Dungeon reviews
Stand at the front, get picked on, make noises when stuff happens. I hope the actors enjoy their jobs as much as they appear to. An excellent way to spend an hour or so.

Visited the York Dungeon with my husband during a short holiday to N.Yorkshire. All the staff were absolutely fantastic & made it a brilliant & hilarious experience. It exceeded our expectations by far & was the highlight of our holiday. Definitely worth a visit. (We didn't book tickets in advance & there was no issue paying at the door although might be best to book in advance during busier times)
We tried to book discount tickets online on Monday for a Tuesday visit. It would not let us get the discount with only a 1 day in advance booking. So we didn't bother with online. You can easily walk up and buy tickets so we didn't have to plan our day around that. We just went to the last one as that ended up working for us. It's pricey and I was hesitant to pay for our whole family. But we ended up having a blast. Lots of laughs and thrills. Definitely some screams. The actors were excellent and the special effects were really fun. This was our first time doing one of these dungeon tours. My son who hates anything horror or bloody or gore wasn't thrilled with it. The rest of us had a lot of fun.
