Fairfax House was created in 1762 to be a townhouse for the powerful Fairfax family during York’s winter social season. It was also intended to be a dowry for the Fairfaxes' daughter, Anne, although she remained unmarried. Though extensively adapted in the 20th century as a movie theater and dance hall, Fairfax House has been returned to its former glory for you to explore. As you roam through the house, be transported to the splendor of city living in Georgian York with one of the finest collections of English 18th-century furniture in the world. Discover the tastes and fashions of the day for architecture, interior design, and food, and the customs and habits of York’s elite. If you have young ones to entertain, children’s trail guides are available from reception. Very interesting house with a history. Guide was very knowledgeable and clearly enthusiastic about the place. Some nice examples of the period furniture and wonderful ceilings. Interesting facts about how catholics had to live at that time. Fairfax family ties to the saving of the Minster from sacking by parliamentarian army.

House is very neatly displayed. Guides are knowledgeable and can tell you interesting/ quirky stories about every room of the house (especially the hidden details you might overlook just going round yourself). Workmanship of the restoration is breathtaking.
