Imperial War Museum North
Housed in a stunning modernist structure of sharp corners, glassy surfaces, and abstract shapes, Imperial War Museum North explores the impact of war and conflict on society. Inside, the 3,500 sq m (38,000 sq ft) gallery floor houses the permanent exhibits. Check out the field gun that fired the British Army’s first shell in World War I and watch the Big Picture Show, which presents the museum's photography, art, and sound in a 360-degree audio-visual setting. The museum also displays a large piece of twisted steel from the World Trade Center to give an idea of the force that the buildings' collapse generated. The focal point of the museum's award-winning architecture is a striking, glass "air shard" pointing 55 m (180 ft) up toward the sky. Imperial War Museum North is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our , custom trip planner Edition.

Terrible lighting and dreadful audio-visual displays let down what could be a good if small collection, in a fantastic building. Cafe is good and there is more on view in the gift shop than in the...

Wonderfully presented and organized, the exhibits are chronological and facilitate social distancing well. Yes, the museum is free! Bought a guide in support, and enjoyed photographing the shards at sunrise, sunset and evening when I lived nearby. Friends recommended a visit, and it was well worth an hour. Update: Went back for Poppies art installation in November 2021, stunning and touching.

This is both a fascinating and moving museum. The display follows a timeline from World War One to the present. I recommend purchasing the guidebook since it highlights items of particular interest to look out for There are regular film shows with the film shown on the walls in the main area. I found these to be very interesting. The one that I found to be most moving was about how children are affected by war There is a very good shop and also a cafe on site .
