Lancaster Castle
At Lancaster Castle, learn about the long and gruesome role this castle played in English history. On the tour of this 11th century medieval castle and its still in-use courtroom, gain insight into the Pendle Witch Trials as well as the ways in which prisoners were executed and deported. Explore the modern prison block, in use up until 2011, and the castle’s old dungeon cells. Inside Hadrian’s Tower, ponder the display of shackles, manacles and neck irons once used to restrain prisoners. After the tour, take in views of the city and the River Lune from the castle’s commanding hilltop position, or if you prefer, relax in the café, located in the former prison’s waiting room. Enlightening tour of Lancaster Castle with all its dark history from 11th century. Our tour guide, Cameron, was most knowledgeable and entertaining to make the visit a pleasure. Thank you.

Great tour & our tour guide was amazing 😊 As I'm disabled, the only difficulty I had was walking up the sloped path at the front but my husband helped me. The rest of this magnificent place is easy to walk around & navigate. Will definitely return as some of it is closed due to restoration.

It's a small castle that is slowly being renovated/developed, but is definitely worth visiting and only needs an hour to look around. There are free guided tours of the Courts/Prison (mine was done by 'King' David, who was very entertaining). The main square/courtyard is a lovely space.
