Explore the origins of the historic valley by hiking to Castle Crag, the lowest of the fells on the Wainwright listing. Rising just about 290 m (951 ft) above sea level, the hill features the remains of an Iron Age hill fort. Three faces of the rugged fell are steep and all sides have been comprehensively excavated. Follow the steep winding path to the summit, which is topped with a WWI memorial. The views from the top expand over the flat valley, which used to be covered by a lake during the Ice Age.     It’s a lovely walk the last 100m is a little tricky walking through old slate workings and can be slippery so wear good footwear but the view is beautiful down to Derwent water and Keswick . Easily...
