Regarded as one of the finest examples of Norman architecture and included on UNESCO’s World Heritage list, Durham Cathedral was founded in 1093 to replace an earlier church, which housed the shrine of Saint Cuthbert of Lindisfarne. Today, the cathedral’s treasures include relics of Saint Cuthbert, the head of Saint Oswald of Northumbria, and the remains of the Venerable Bede. The cathedral’s library contains one of the most complete sets of early printed books in England. Your standard old cathedral building, full of history and things to look at. Very limited information signs to learn about the objects and I wasn't offered an audio guide like other cathedrals have The tower has a charge of £5 to climb, which isn't mentioned at the front gate so take into consideration when giving your voluntary donation.

Accommodation was clean, we only had scrambled egg on toast for breakfast but the guests who had a full English declared it excellent, the empty plates backed that up. Meals were traditional pub food, but was good quality. The owners were very pleasant and wanting you to enjoy your time in their home/ business.
