Home to over 100 students, Durham Castle is a working university building that offers guided tours. Students sleep and live in the castle's renovated keep while they work on their studies at Durham University. Schedule a guided tour via the website before visiting. The two chapels in the castle mark distinct eras in English history: The Norman Chapel was completed in 1078, and the Tunstall's Chapel was erected in the 16th century. Be sure to visit the towers on your tour for views over the River Wear of Durham Cathedral. The cathedral and the castle combined are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. • Great Norman castle (even if most of it was modified and rebuilt since it was erected), located in highly defendable position. It is impressive when looked from outside, however the full experience...

  • The tour of the castle was really great and was lead by a knowledgeable guide. The grounds are amazing and full of history that would suit anyone coming in. Just felt a bit awkward walking into student study areas and was very conscious not to disturb.
  • Truly magnificent buildings,so much history. Lucky to be able to stay here for a couple of days. Just to roam about breathing in all of that history. Bacon and egg for breakfast pretty good as well. Best to book the tour tickets in advance.
