Created in the late 1500's for one of England's most notable society female figures, Bess of Hardwick, Hardwick Hall and Gardens was an architectural and botanical "marvel of its time." Today, as a property of the National Trust, Hardwick Hall exhibits some of the finest collections of Elizabethan tapestries and embroidery work dating from the 16th century. After touring the hall, take a leisurely stroll or a guided tour through one of the four gardens, with their exquisite lawns, orchards, and fine herbs. It was, after all, an estate fit for one of the wealthiest women in England. There are children's activities, such as portrait drawing and walking the Nature Detective Trail. I come here quite a lot as I have National Trust membership and I've always really enjoyed it. There's some beautiful gardens to explore and a variety of stunning flowers. It's a perfect place for a family day out. The Cafe and the shops are nice. The visitor facilities are great. You can go inside the Elizabethen house and look around. It is quite remarkable. The tapestries and paintings are amazing. They have friendly guides in every room and they are always very helpful, informative and willing to answer any questions which makes the experience even better. One thing I really like about Hardwick Hall is that you can go on some wonderful walks. I love being surrounded by nature. It's so much fun exploring the fields and walking for hours. I always find a bench and enjoy a picnic whilst admiring the delightful view.
A very interesting hall, with plenty of volunteers telling great stories about the place. It is particularly recommended if you are interested in tapestries and romantic stories. The gardens are good, but the ponds are not properly looked after. Family events could improve with a little bit more imaginative challenges aimed at a wider age range.
