Create an itinerary including Chislehurst Caves
Use your guide and oil lamp at Chislehurst Caves to explore a network of man-made tunnels 30 m (98 ft) below the surface. The tunnels were originally made to extract chalk and flint, but since the turn of the 20th century they have been used as an arsenal, an air-raid shelter, a dance venue, and even for mushroom cultivation. Take the guided tour to explore the labyrinth, learn the folklore, and get a few surprises along the way. Only groups need to book in advance. The tour is about 1.6 km (1 mi) long and lasts about 50 minutes. The rough terrain is not very accessible, but possible with a strong pusher. Put Chislehurst Caves on your schedule, and learn what else deserves a visit by using our Chislehurst trip itinerary builder website.

  • I do not recommend this tour for children under 8 or any child who is sensitive. On our tour there were a number of young children who were scared. The tour leader (Peter) had a tone and delivery...

  • Lovely 1 mile walk through the caves with a sometimes nice but very grumpy snappy tour guide providing the history of the caves, although we dare ask a question! Lit up by the adults carrying real lanterns which makes this an exceptional experience for the family. Tour is about 1 hour, wear masks whilst inside and please dont wake the cat whose snoozing in the office. There is a cafe providing a varied menu, suitable for all, ice creams and drinks, large car park and toilets. Easy to get to and a Harvester is nearby if you prefer a more substantial menu for breakfast, lunch or dinner. Yes I would go again.
  • This was an wonderful experience with a knowledgeable, funny and interactive tour guide. The cafe has good food as well and a welcoming atmosphere. The caves at Chislehurst in Kent, are a labyrinth of man-made tunnels, forming a maze covering over 6 Hectares and are up to 30 metres below the surface! In World War 2 up to 15 000 people stayed there sheltering from the bombing 💣 of London!
