A neat, cosmopolitan city of shaded plazas and laid-back neighborhoods, Cairns serves as a popular base for exploration of the surrounding region and the Great Barrier Reef, as well as a center for watersport activities like surfing or waterskiing.
Your day by day itinerary now includes Cairns Dive School, Reef Experience and Esplanade Lagoon Pool. Attractions like Four Mile Beach and Cairns Kart Hire Track make great kid-friendly stops. Step out of Cairns with an excursion to Village Gallery in Palm Cove--about 32 minutes away. Spend the 4th (Sat) wandering through the wild on a nature and wildlife tour. It doesn't end there: trek along Esplanade Boardwalk.

Sydney to Cairns is an approximately 4.5-hour flight. You can also drive; or take a train. Plan for a bit warmer temperatures traveling from Sydney in January, with highs in Cairns at 37°C and lows at 28°C. On the 5th (Sun), wrap the sightseeing up by early afternoon so you can fly to Adelaide.
