Hersonissos — 1 night

Wholeheartedly dedicated to tourism, Hersonissos remains best known for its vibrant nightlife, its bars and clubs attracting partygoers from around the world.
Kick off your visit on the 9th (Sat): explore the activities along Lake Voulismeni and then head off the coast to Spinalonga (Kalydon). On your second day here, observe the fascinating underwater world at CRETAquarium, get engrossed in the history at Heraklion Archaeological Museum, and then steep yourself in history at The Palace of Knossos.

Budapest, Hungary to Hersonissos is an approximately 7.5-hour flight. You can also take a bus; or do a combination of bus, taxi, and ferry. The time zone changes from Central European Standard Time (CET) to Eastern European Standard Time (EET), which is usually a 1 hour difference. Plan for a bit warmer nights when traveling from Budapest in July since evenings lows in Hersonissos dip to 24°C. Finish up your sightseeing early on the 10th (Sun) so you can go by car to Rethymnon.

Rethymnon — 2 nights

Rethymnon combines the old-fashioned charm of a small town with proximity to long sandy beaches with all the modern conveniences usually found in big tourist resorts.
On the 11th (Mon), visit Rethymnon Old Town, then get engrossed in the history at Historical and Folklore Museum of Rethymno, then contemplate the long history of The Venetian Fortezza, and finally see Off-Road Tours. On the next day, stroll through Reptisland, take in the spiritual surroundings of Monastery of Arkadi, and then contemplate the waterfront views at Lake Kournas.

Getting from Hersonissos to Rethymnon by car takes about 1.5 hours. Other options: take a shuttle; or take a bus. In July, plan for daily highs up to 37°C, and evening lows to 25°C. Finish your sightseeing early on the 12th (Tue) to allow enough time to drive to Chania Town.

Chania Town — 4 nights

The place where Cretan and Venetian cultures merged in the 13th century, Chania Town attracts throngs of tourists with its well-preserved medieval harbor.
Get in touch with nature at Elafonissi Beach and Falassarna Beach. Your itinerary includes some good beach time at Balos Lagoon and Agia Marina Beach. Venture out of the city with trips to Samaria Gorge National Park (in Sfakia) and Holy Trinity Monastery (Agia Triada) (in Akrotiri). There's still lots to do: go for a stroll along the water at Old Venetian Harbor, kick back and relax at Stavros Beach, and explore the different monuments and memorials at Souda Bay War Cemetery.
