Located just off Crete's southwestern corner, Elafonissi offers an alternative vacation idea for those looking to avoid the larger, more crowded Greek islands.
Kick off your visit on the 10th (Sat): hike along Elafonisi Viewpoint and then enjoy the sand and surf at Elafonissi Beach.

Rethymnon combines the old-fashioned charm of a small town with proximity to long sandy beaches with all the modern conveniences usually found in big tourist resorts.
Change things up with these side-trips from Rethymnon: Reptisland (in Melidoni), Museum of Ancient Eleutherna (in Eletherna) and Chania Town (Etz Hayyim Synagogue & Old Venetian Harbor). Spend the 13th (Tue) exploring nature at Samaria Gorge National Park. You can drive from Elafonissi to Rethymnon in 2.5 hours. Another option is to take a bus. In September, daily temperatures in Rethymnon can reach 34°C, while at night they dip to 23°C. Cap off your sightseeing on the 14th (Wed) early enough to go by car to Hersonissos.
