Crete's largest city, Heraklion remains best known for its proximity to a sprawling Bronze Age archaeological site, once the center of a vanished Minoan civilization.
On the 4th (Thu), get up close and personal with brilliant marine life at CRETAquarium, delve into the distant past at The Palace of Knossos, and then get engrossed in the history at Heraklion Archaeological Museum.

Traveling by flight from Athens to Heraklion takes 2.5 hours. Alternatively, you can do a combination of taxi and ferry; or ride a ferry. When traveling from Athens in August, plan for a bit cooler days and about the same nights in Heraklion: temperatures range from 85°F by day to 73°F at night. Cap off your sightseeing on the 4th (Thu) early enough to catch the ferry to Fira.
