Kissamos — 4 nights

A quiet port town situated on Crete's western tip, Kissamos attracts mostly domestic tourists and possesses more of the quintessential Greek feel than livelier resorts strung along the island's coastline.
Take a break from the city and head to Elafonissi Beach and Agia Marina Beach. Step off the beaten path and head to Royal Octopus DIVE CENTER and Beer Tastings & Tours. You'll find plenty of places to visit near Kissamos: Gramvousa Beach (in Gramvousa) and Elafonisi Viewpoint (in Elafonissi). There's lots more to do: kick back and relax at Falassarna Beach, stroll through Afrata Beach, explore the different monuments and memorials at German Military Cemetery, and see the interesting displays at Ancient Olive Tree.

Covering Crete's western section, Chania prefecture features some of the island's least spoiled natural areas, as well as its only freshwater lake. Most tourists concentrate on the prefecture's namesake capital, overlooking the dramatic landscapes of the region's sprawling national park. Designated as one of UNESCO's biosphere reserves, the park contains a rugged gorge known for sheltering many endemic plant species and providing a much-needed refuge for the rare kri-kri goat. Test your best hiking shoes by exploring this nature lover's paradise on day trips from the town of Chania, or settle in one of the nearby villages and spend your vacation touring the island's less-frequented southwestern shore.
