Melk, a small town of about 5,000, hugs the south side of the Danube.
Kick off your visit on the 24th (Wed): take in the architecture and atmosphere at Durnstein Abbey, appreciate the views at Wachau Valley, then contemplate the long history of Melk Abbey, then look for gifts at Wein & Wachau, and finally pause for some serene contemplation at Stadtpfarrkirche Maria Himmelfahrt.

The place where Cretan and Venetian cultures merged in the 13th century, Chania Town attracts throngs of tourists with its well-preserved medieval harbor.

Traveling from Budapest in June, plan for somewhat warmer nights in Chania Town, with lows around 22°C. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 8th (Thu) early enough to take a shuttle to Heraklion.
