Corfu Town, Corfu — 4 nights

Often called "Kastropolis" because of its majestic Venetian castle, Corfu Town once featured such extensive fortifications that a force of over 20,000 soldiers defended them.
Step off the beaten path and head to Corfu Old Town and Vlacherna Monastery. Get out of town with these interesting Corfu Town side-trips: Paradise Beach (in Liapades) and Rovinia Beach (in Paleokastritsa). There's lots more to do: examine the collection at Casa Parlante, step into the grandiose world of New Fortress of Corfu, look for gifts at Sweet 'N Spicy Bahar Shop, and deepen your knowledge of military history at Old Fortress Corfu.

The gateway to one of the largest monastery complexes in Greece, the small town of Kalambaka nestles against a landscape of imposing rock formations rising 400 m (1,300 ft) into the air. Nearly leveled during World War II, the town rebuilt and reinvented itself in the post-war period, quickly becoming one of the region's major travel destinations.
On the 11th (Fri), contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Holy Trinity Monastery (Agia Triada), take in the spiritual surroundings of Meteora, and then take in the architecture and atmosphere at Byzantine Church of the Assumption of Virgin Mary.

You can do a combination of ferry and car from Corfu Town to Kalambaka in 5 hours. Alternatively, you can take a bus. Traveling from Corfu Town in August, things will get a bit cooler in Kalambaka: highs are around 36°C and lows about 20°C. Cap off your sightseeing on the 11th (Fri) early enough to go by car to Nafplio.
