You can fly from Sydney to Cairns in 4.5 hours. Other options are to drive; or take a train. Prepare for a bit warmer weather when traveling from Sydney in August: high temperatures in Cairns hover around 31°C and lows are around 20°C. Finish your sightseeing early on the 14th (Sun) so you can fly back home.
