Villach — 3 nights

Villach is the seventh-largest city in Austria and the second-largest in the federal state of Carinthia. Visit Maria-Wörth and Landskron Castle for their historical value. You'll find plenty of places to visit near Villach: Dom zu Gurk (in Gurk), Hochosterwitz Castle (Burg Hochosterwitz) (in Launsdorf) and Romerbad Thermal Spa (in Bad Kleinkirchheim). There's still lots to do: explore the activities along Lake Worthersee, buy something for everyone on your list at ATRIO Villach, take in the spiritual surroundings of Evangelische Kirche Im Stadtpark, and examine the collection at Minimundus.

Traveling by flight from Vienna to Villach takes 2.5 hours. Alternatively, you can drive; or take a train. Traveling from Vienna in May, plan for a bit cooler nights in Villach, with lows around 8°C. Finish your sightseeing early on the 11th (Wed) so you can drive to Salzburg.
