One of the city's oldest enclosed courtyards, Begijnhof is surrounded by several historical buildings. This inner courtyard dates back to the 14th century and is situated on the Singel canal. View the characteristically Dutch-Gothic wooden homes of this medieval square, including the oldest wooden house in Amsterdam, Het Houten Huis, which was built in the Middle Ages. See the old courtyard gate, built in 1574, as well as the 19th-century gatehouse. If you walk along the southern edge of the courtyard, you can more closely see the features of the 15th-century English Church with its original medieval tower. • We thought it a nice enough place but you can only walk into a part of the courtyard and the small chapel was closed when we went. Some interesting wall plaques on the left as you enter from Spui.

  • A nice place to visit in the middle of all the hustle and bustle. Well preserved piece of Amsterdam history. The church was open to the public so had a wander round and visited the little shop. It is a residential area and so parts of it are restricted access... It is very peaceful and calm... Read up on it before you come here and ten sit quietly and appreciate its beauty
  • It was such a beautiful place. You could make so cool and nice looking pictures and it wasn’t too growded. If you’re near this place go there and even if you need to walk there a couple of minutes it is worth it.
