View the oldest library collection in the country at Stiftsbibliothek. Founded by St. Othmar on the site where St. Gall had established his hermitage, the library holds 2,100 manuscripts dating from the 8th through 15th centuries as well as almost 160,000 published volumes. The library books are available for public use, except for those printed before 1900, which must be read in the reading room. Admire the Rococo-style architecture of the renowned library hall, designed by Peter Thumb. Exhibitions here explain the history of writing and the development of paper and books. Use one of the audio guides in English or take an English-language guided tour, available at specific times. You must wear oversized slippers provided by the library upon entry. • Magnificent, historical tour. A must see for all. The library and cellar museums were fascinating with lots of historical information on St Gall. Spend the extra 5 francs and purchase the audio...

  • I think it was about 18 francs to visit. I really enjoyed seeing the Bibles that were over a thousand years old. A lot of translations in English so I understood the significance of the artifacts.

  • Amazing library, but the ticket price is very steep at CHF 18, and the no photography policy is petty, plain and simple. Don't forget to visit the cathedral as well. It is free. It is just as impressive. And, you can take pictures.
  • Beautiful and interesting place, probably a must see when visiting St Gallen. Wonderful artwork as well as well arranged historical exhibits!
