Bernisches Historisches Museum - Einstein Museum
Get a sense of the capital city's long history in a broader world context at Bernisches Historisches Museum - Einstein Museum. The second largest historical museum in Switzerland, it houses 500,000 artifacts from the Stone Age up to modern day. The building housing the relics is itself an attraction: built in 1894, it was inspired by 15th- and 16th-century Swiss castles. The incorporated Einstein Museum tells the story of the famous scientist who developed his Theory of Relativity while living in the city. Stop for a coffee and pastry at the on-site bistro or bring a picnic to enjoy in the museum's park. Make sure to go all the way up the top of the Einstein Museum for superb views of Bern and the Alps. Thought it was a good thing to do while in Bern, I must admit I thought it would be more about his brilliance and what he achieved etc. But I got the vibe it was mainly about WW2 and his university..... more

Amazing. Go go go. Spend half a day there. It’s such a huge and diverse museum. I didn’t even have time to see it all. The Buddhist and Samurai sections were so huge. I was just expecting it to be a small add on to the rest of the Bern stuff. It’s honestly worth seeing just for the Samurai stuff alone. One staff member was a bit of an *** though. So strict to rules and no manners. We were in the gift shop and she literally just came up to us saying “You need to leave” in a aggressive tone. The others were nice.

We are usually not big fans of museums, but we thought that since we have free entrance with the Swiss Travel Pass, it would be a harm to visit the place. The museum turned out to be one of the best museums we visited, from the moment we stepped unto the grounds and into the building. Not only is the exterior majestic, it also provides a relaxing place to just chill and relax. The interior of the museum itself is also massive, with several exhibitions you can visit across the floors. We particularly enjoyed the history of Bern with the comprehensive explanations and artifacts, which made the experience a lot more enjoyable. Do make sure to allocate about one to two hours and visit early if possible, as we did not have enough time to cover all the exhibits.
