Part of the old town, Riddarholmen is a small islet housing a number of restored 17th-century palaces and a medieval burial church of Swedish monarchs. Surrounded by three private palaces, one of which has a medieval tower, the island's central square is dominated by the 19th-century statue of Birger Jarl, the founder of the city. Stroll to the western end of the islet for panoramic views of the bay and abounding photo opportunities, especially at sunset.
