Castillo de Santa Barbara
Climb 166 meters (544 ft) above sea level to Castillo de Santa Barbara for panoramic views of Alicante bay. Originally constructed in the late 9th century, the castle features a series of fortress walls atop Mount Benacantil and is home to the city’s historical museum. Explore archeological remains of the Bronze Age found in the city or take a guided castle tour to see areas normally closed to the public, such as the cisterns and dungeon. Ride the elevator from the bottom of the mountain to the castle, then enjoy a leisurely walk back to the city center after your visit. Put Castillo de Santa Barbara on your schedule, and learn what else deserves a visit by using our Alicante trip planner.

Think most people who go to Alicante will visit this fortress. Easy to find a route up , great views and lots of photo opportunities. There’s not an awful lot to actually see but the all round...

We walked to the top of the castle from several different approaches. There are many routes and trails to access the castle and it's breath taking! A Great form of exercise with a view :)

Great place to visit and free. Views from the top are amazing and also plenty to see inside the castle . You can walk up which is good as you can also take in surrounding scenery which is spectacular. There is also a lift by the beach on the front that will take you to the castle for a small fee . Would definitely recommend visiting here when in Alicante 👍

This place is huge. Layers of fortifications along with exhibits of pottery, banners, a clock mechanism and sculptures. You can catch a bus or taxi to the top, walk up or catch a lift from a tunnel that is accessed from the promenade. Look for the signs and opening in the cliff face! The views from the top are tremendous if the weather is kind. There are refreshments available from a kiosk, or limited menu of meals and snacks from a cafe and terrace. The lift is €2.70 but free for pensioners.
