To see one of the world's biggest collections of Russian art, head to State Tretyakov Gallery. Established in 1856, the museum began as a private collection of artworks acquired by merchant Pavel Tretyakov and housed inside a building designed by artist Viktor Vasnetsov. Today, this national repository of art contains over 170,000 pieces, including notable works by Repin, Kandinsky, and Malevich. The museum's vast collection also includes a series of 12th-century icons painted on wood by unknown artists. Pick up a floor plan at the entrance, and be sure to visit the halls housing sculptures by Shubin, Prokofiev, and Martos. The State Tretyakov Gallery Visited on 8/10/2019 In front of The State Tretyakov Gallery stands the statue of Pavel Mikhailovich Tretyakov, a Moscow merchant who acquired the works by Russian artists of his day. His collection of about 2000 works was later presented to the city of Moscow as a gift. The Tretyakov family acquired this house where The State Tretyakov Gallery is standing. As Tretyakov's collection grew, more and more extensions were added to the original house. The State Tretyakov Gallery is now an art gallery, houses an exposition of Russian art of the 12th - early 20th century. It occupies 62 rooms on two floors. The collection contains more than 130,000 exhibits. Although I am not an artist or art enthusiast, I cannot deny that I am very impressed by the paintings, some are gigantic in size, depicting portraits of prominent figures of Russian culture.

A very big gallery with great artwork (if you're a fan of it). You need at least a couple of hours to see all of it. The ticket is 500 rubbles for adults. But I'd recommend the Shimov gallery. Much more impressive.
