Libearty Bear Sanctuary Zarnesti
Watch the bears feed on forest plants, climb trees, and swim in pools at Libearty Bear Sanctuary Zarnesti, which shelters over 70 animals who've been rescued from illegal exploitation. The story of the sanctuary started in 1998 when its founder, Cristina Lapis, saw three bears caged outside a restaurant who were being used to amuse customers. The habitat of oak and hazel forest allows the bears to stay hidden in the bushes, except in the morning when they come near the fence to be fed. The sanctuary is also home to a she-wolf that was born in a zoo and rejected by her own pack. Watch a short clip explaining how the sanctuary was built before going to see its furry residents. Excellent tour. Short (1.25hr) but its for the tourists and bears. The park is only open in the mornings as not to stress the bears, and so they are on display. Its a charity so has no government...

We were lucky enough to be visiting with the snow which gave it a fairy tale ambiance to it. Regardless, the bears' stories and the everlasting staff's commitment stole the show. I highly recommend visiting this place when in Brasov!

A truly amazing experience, the bears are happy, saved from circus or zoos where they've stayed in bad conditions. Great effort being done by all people involved in this amazing project in Romania.
