The National Museum in Warsaw
At The National Museum in Warsaw, see the largest Polish painting, "Battle of Grunwald" by Jan Matejko, and the largest European collection of artifacts of the Nubian culture. The museum features about 830,000 paintings, sculptures, drawings, illustrations, photographs, numismatic items, and objects of applied arts. Do not miss the medieval art collection, including intricate altarpieces and painted wooden statues from all over Poland. Look for the paintings reclaimed after being stolen during World War II, such as "Jewish Woman Selling Oranges" and "Black Woman." Rest in a cafe or on one of the benches of an inside courtyard with a fountain. A park behind the building once served as prince's gardens. Decent museum with a lot to do, good for an afternoon. Mainly features medieval to early modern art, with a few things from the early 1900s. Temporary exhibition was ok.

Lovely collection of art, and free on Tuesdays! Just be aware that every art class in Poland is there on the free day, the massive hoards of children can make exploring the museum a challenge. Inside there are some very stunning pieces by Polish painters, with a few additional galleries on world art. The paintings are by far the most impressive thing to see. The restaurant is in the lower levels and is a bit classier than one might expect at a museum. If there is a gift shop, we couldn't find it.

99% of the museum closed. No indication.
