Kosciuszko's Mound (Kopiec Kosciuszki), Krakow

Sitting atop a natural hill at 326 m (1,070 ft) above sea level, Kosciuszko's Mound (Kopiec Kosciuszki) stands as an architectural marvel that was erected in 1823 to commemorate Polish national leader Tadeusz Kościuszko. The man-made mound was modelled off the natural mounds in Krak and Wanda, and has both the Founding Act encapsulated in a glass and marble case at its base and buried urns filled with battlefield soil inside it. In the 1850s, Austrian fortifications were added to the site, but were later demolished following World War II. In 2003 the mound was restored with state-of-the-art technology to protect it from the elements; a museum next door preserves artifacts and mementos of Kosciuszko's life.
