Yaguaron
Yaguaron traces its foundation back to the 16th century, when it became a Franciscan reservation for Guarani Indians. Monks subsequently built a large church--considered one of Paraguay's finest examples of Franciscan architecture--that still stands today and remains the primary draw for visitors. Those planning a trip to Yaguaron will encounter a town of less than 30,000 inhabitants set among verdant hills. A nearby oratory provides sweeping views over nearby towns. Yaguaron is also the birthplace of 19th-century dictator Jose Gaspar Rodriguez de Francia and the town hosts a museum dedicated to him.
