Te Anau Glowworm Caves
Step into a boat and glide into the magical world of Te Anau Glowworm Caves, a system of 12,000-year-old limestone caves carved into intricate curving shapes by the river running through them. The caves, also explorable on foot, are home to glowworms, bioluminescent fly larvae that fill the cave with a soft light. As the caves are fragile, certain areas are restricted from visitors. You will need to register online for one of a few daily tours by boat and foot, which are run in small groups of around 12 people. We were unsure about this tour due to the weather, but our expectations were definitely exceeded. The staff were really friendly and informative. The tour starts on a catamaran, then you dock on the other side of the lake (about 30 minute trip) followed by a debrief at a cosy hut (has a little shop and everything). Then you go in to the cave on foot over a walkway followed by a pitch black boat ride where you can only see the glow worms - amazing. Everything felt very safe and at the end a free hot drink is provided. If you are on the fence, I would recommend going on this tour, well worth it.

What an amazing adventure. We boarded the catamaran on the lake front, and were warmly greeted by the tour operators. The ride to the caves took about 40 minutes, but the trip was very enjoyable. I travelled with my 2 elderly parents, and they enjoyed the trip. The tour guides were very knowledgeable, with a very cultural interpretation of the caves, journey and wildlife. I highly recommend this journey to anybody, probably best if the kids are older than 10.
