The impressive structure was built by the Knights of Malta between 1573 and 1578. The interior boasts intricately carved walls, a painted vaulted ceiling, and a marble floor made up of Knight's tombs. The cathedral's chapels are filled with elaborate riches and dedicated to the different patron saints of the Knights. Don't miss Caravaggio's masterpiece, "The Beheading of Saint John the Baptist" (1608) in the Oratory, for which it was commissioned. Gorgeous building with magnificent Baroque interiors and arts. Good and informative audio guide covering all areas of the Cathedral. Don't forget the short but excellent film made for the Caravaggio's painting and the stairs to the balcony so you could look at the main nave again from the top before leaving. The whole visit can easily take 1 to 2 hours or even more.
