Ggantija Megalithic Temples, Ggantija

Behold one of the world's oldest free-standing structures, and one of Malta’s best-preserved prehistoric sites, at Ggantija Megalithic Temples. A World Heritage Site, the temple features two separate religious sites built between 3,600 and 3,200 BCE, preceding even Stonehenge and the Egyptian pyramids. The name is derived from the Maltese word for giant "ġgant," alluding to the area's association with the race of giants. Notice the huge limestone blocks that are a testament to the technological feats accomplished during this early period of human development: some are over 5 m (16 ft) long and weigh more than 50 tons.
