Create an itinerary including St. Peter's Basilica
St. Peter's Basilica is not only among the most renowned works of Renaissance architecture, but it is also one of the largest churches in the world. Built over a period of about 120 years, this imposing structure was designed by several prominent Renaissance architects, including Michelangelo and Bernini. Tradition and strong historical evince hold that the tomb of Saint Peter, one of Jesus’s twelve apostles, is located directly below the altar of the church. Because of its location in the Vatican, the Pope presides at a number of services held here throughout the year, frequently drawing audiences of up to 80,000 people. Take the elevator up to the roof and then climb the 323 steps to the top of the dome, which offers sweeping views of the surrounding area. A strict dress code forbids shorts, bare shoulders, or miniskirts inside the site. • Don’t be put off by the queues for security. They move really quickly- even when going half way round the square you’ll be in in under 30 minutes. It is possibly the most stunning church I have ever....  more

  • If you're able to do it then climb to the top of the basilica but the basilica. There is an elevator that goes up-and-down which makes it easier but the walk is quite doable. You can go just to the inside of the basilica or you can walk higher up and go outside and get a tremendous view of the city. Getting to the basilica is quite easy and climbing higher is very doable as well although a little tight at times it was certainly worth the effort. There is a bathroom halfway up Along with a free water fountain and a small gift shop.
  • This basilica is remarkable. The craftsmanship of the sculptors & artists who created it is simply legendary. Their attention to detail is second to none with symmetry everywhere. You are able to climb or take an elevator to the top to see an unmatched view of Rome. We also just so happened to be lucky enough to see the Pope while we were in town and in the Vatican - this is the second time I see the pope and I have only been to Rome twice in my life. Currently 2 for 2! Anyways I highly recommend you come check out the Vatican and St. Peter's Basilica!
