Create an itinerary including Basilica Catedrale Sant'Agata V.M. Catania
The seat of the Archbishops of Catania, Basilica Catedrale Sant'Agata V.M. Catania has been destroyed--by earthquakes and Mount Elba eruptions--and rebuilt several times through the centuries. The church's foundation is built on top of Roman bathhouse remains and what's left of the fortified church walls. Part of the transept, the two towers, and three apses are the only visible parts of the original Norman building. The humility of the original structure has given way to grand architecture and artwork that surrounds the tombs of King Frederick III, King Louis, and other notable Italians. • Both inside and outside, the church is spectacular. So much gold!! make sure you take photos of the altar and the statues.

  • Active church so expect it to be closed for services, weddings etc. Quite ornate inside, but not much explained. They do have a decomposing person on display though so good for the kids!
  • Bazilica has some awkward working hours but basically at night it’s always open. If you’re lucky you’ll be part of some ceremony and there are a lot of weddings happening here. Entrance was free. Basilica inside is really nice but as the rest of the city everything is ruined by the smell of the garbage that is all around the main city Square and it’s streets.
