Study the ruins of Temple of Poseidon, where the ancient Greeks brought sacrifices to the powerful god of the sea, Neptune. The Doric columns still stand 60 m (200 ft) above the ocean, even in their ruined state. The artifacts harvested from the site, including the Kournos of Sounion, are on display at the Athens National Archeological Museum. Take a guided tour from the entrance or walk the grounds on your own along the trail that leads to the temple. The attraction is visible from all around the peninsula, but the view from the ruins is by far the highlight. Be sure to wear comfortable walking shoes. A visit to Temple of Poseidon represents just the start of the adventure when you use our Sounio trip builder site to plot your vacation.

Stunning location. Out of season so felt as though we had the place almost to ourselves. The weather was incredible too. Can also recommend lunch by the water in the Taverna below.......

We had some time to kill before our flight from Athens and spontaneously decided to visit the Temple of Poseidon - and it was 100% worth it! This temple has the most beautiful setting, surrounded by the sea. Which is of course only fitting for a temple that is dedicated to the God of the sea. There are many nice seafood restaurants close by, so you can combine your trip with a seaside lunch/dinner.

What a remarkable experience. If any other country had such a unique temple, the island would be a crowded tourism center. Thanks to Greece being bad in marketing, it is still a small peaceful island with only couple of places to have lunch and sit. If you’re sailing through, spending the night here would be amazing under the stars with the companionship of Poseidon!
