Perched atop Monopetra, Castle of Monolithos offers views of the sea and two small islets below. The castle was built in 1480 to protect the island against potential attacks. To reach the ruins of this ancient castle, climb steep--and sometimes slippery--steps that are cut into the rock face. Along the way, notice the small piles of rocks gathered at the side of the route. Their meaning is unknown. Visit the small chapel inside the castle dedicated to St. Pantaleon. Free place to visit, a unique trip to a fantastic view point across the sea. This ancient castle with the more modern small Greek church is a must. There's around 100 stairs to climb but we managed fine on a dry calm day with two boys under 10. There seems to be more barriers now to stop you exploring some areas but this is really for your own safety. Then it was coffee and well earned ice creams at the tavana at the bottom of the stairs. Parking is free on the road
