Part of Rhodes' world-famous medieval old town, Palace of the Grand Master of the Knights of Rhodes exists as one of the few remaining examples of Gothic architecture in Greece. Built by the Knights of Saint John, a Christian military order which controlled Rhodes from 1309 until 1522, the imposing palace features fairy-tale towers, ramparts, and more than 150 rooms. Remarkably undamaged during the Ottoman siege of the island in the 16th century, the palace suffered massive damage in 1856 when a nearby ammunition storage site exploded. Restored by Italian architect Vittorio Mesturino in the 1930s, the palace then served as a vacation home for dictator Benito Mussolini. Today the palace houses a museum noted for displaying well-preserved Hellenistic and Roman mosaic floors. • We were staying at the south of Rhodes & decided to travel up to Rhodes Town to visit this stunning Palace. We paid for our tickets & was immediately told to wear a mask. We were happy to wear one...

  • By far my favourite attraction in all of Rhodes. The old city of Rhodes is an absolute marvel, I have never seen a medieval walled city so well-preserved and full of life. The Palace itself is similarly attractive: the castle seems almost unaffected by time as you walk around the perfectly preserved rooms and courtyard. The mosaics covering the floors are masterful in their design, not faded in the slightest. Visiting the old city and Palace is a must when in Rhodes.
  • This is your MUST, Top 1 priority if you come to Rhodes. Definitely worth the visit. Allow for at least 1-1,5 hour. (Note: the inner city is a pedestrian area), The Palace has a Byzantine exhibition and a mosaic one in different floors; the inner courtyard is also very nice. Normal ticket is €8, but there is a Combined Ticket (also for 3 other locations) for €10, which I would recommend as long as you have the time to check any of the other places (2 are closed on Tuesdays). There is a separate ticket to visit the city walls.
